Matthew E. Kahn ’88 will release his new book Climatopolis: How Our Cities Will Thrive in the Hotter Future in early September. In the book, Kahn argues that climate change is inevitable, and outlines how cities and regions around the world will gradually adapt.  Some urban places will suffer but this optimistic book argues that free market induced technological progress and individual choice will help to protect urbanites in rich and poor countries from climate change’s most severe blows.

After graduating from Hamilton with a BA in economics, Kahn went on to earn a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago. Kahn had served as a Professor at several prestigious institutions before joining UCLA in 2007, where he is currently a Professor at the UCLA Institute of the Environment, the Department of Economics, and the Department of Public Policy. The release of Climatopolis will not be Kahn’s first published work; he also released Green Cities: Urban Growth and the Environment in 2006 and co-authored Heroes and Cowards: The Social Face of War in 2009.   He blogs for the Christian Science Monitor at http://www.csmonitor.com/Money/Green-Economics.

Kahn will be speaking at Hamilton about his book and current fields of research on September 21.
