Robert Kantrowitz ’82, professor and chair of mathematics, presented “A close look at the geometric series test” at the joint meetings of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society held Jan. 15-18 in Baltimore.

His presentation focused on a property of the real numbers involving infinitesimals that is named after the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse. Kantrowitz discussed the equivalence of the Archimedean property and the geometric series test from calculus.
