Robert Kantrowitz ’82, professor and chair of mathematics, presented “Archimedes meets geometric series” in the mathematics seminar series on Sept. 23 at Middlebury College. His talk centered around the Archimedean property which guarantees that, given any real number, there is always a natural number that is greater.
Kantrowitz discussed the connection between the Archimedean property and the fact that certain infinite geometric series such as 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 + ... converge to a finite sum.
