Utica's Observer-Dispatch featured an article written by Hamilton College student Kat McGrory '05. Her article, in the paper's "Opinion" section, discussed recent proposals by both the Bush administration and the Roman Catholic Church to ban gay marriages.
McGrory claims that both institutions are "hypocritical." She wrote, "If the Roman Catholic Church grew in power by preaching a message of love for all, and the United States of America by freedom and equity to its citizens, both institutions can justly be called hypocritical. Imagine: two of the most powerful bodies in the world issuing statements that contradict the very essence of their existence." McGrory argues that both the American government and the Roman Catholic Church should re-examine their institutions, accept gay marriage, and allow people to be accepted in both political and religious communities. McGrory advises that both "practice what they preach."
McGrory, a native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., has been featured numerous times in her local paper, the Poughkeepsie Journal, as well as Hamilton College's main local paper, the Observer-Dispatch. McGrory is also the current news editor of Hamilton College's student-run paper, The Spectator.
