Robin Kinnel, the Silas D. Childs Professor of Chemistry Emeritus, presented a paper at the 2010 International Chemical Congress of the Pacific Basin Societies (PacifiChem) on Dec. 18, in Honolulu. In his presentation, he discussed work carried out while on leave at Scripps Institute of Oceanography and at Hamilton. Titled "A MALDI-Directed Genomisotopic Approach to the Discovery of Novel Natural Products in Cyanobacteria," the paper described the guided isolation of a new and unusual tripeptide called cryptomaldamide and its structure proof. Kinnel also reported on two other new compounds, whose structures are still incomplete, that were discovered by using the same approach.
