The Observer-Dispatch's special section on the history of Oneida County quoted Philip Klinkner, the James S. Sherman Professor of Government, in two stories, one about the history of Sherrill and another about a U.S. vice president from Utica, on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
In "A City Is Named," Klinkner provided background on the congressional representative who facilitated the establishment of Sherrill as a city. "Utica's Favorite Son" discussed James Schoolcraft Sherman, the area's longtime congressman and a former mayor of Utica, who was named to the Republican ticket with William Howard Taft in 1908. "In some ways, Central New York was the Silicon Valley of its day," said Klinkner. "It was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution. It was also a huge incubator for ideas and movements. … it produced some important political leaders,"
