The Latino Renaissance:  The Many Faces of the 21st Century Latino will be held at Hamilton College on the weekend of April 8 and 9. The current Latino undergraduates and alumni have designed this special event with the goals of offering Hamilton Latino students a network with which to explore post-graduation career options, and providing the alumni a great opportunity to reunite, enhance and share their established networks. 

This exciting weekend will consist of the following scheduled events:

Featured Guest SPEAKER –Ms. Sandra Guzman, Editor in Chief of Latina magazine

Ms. Guzman is an award-winning journalist with more than ten years of experience in newspapers and television. As the dynamic leader of the first bilingual lifestyle magazine for Hispanic women in the U.S., Ms. Guzman gives a voice to Latinas nationwide and will add valuable insight into the weekend's theme. 

Alumni Career PanelA diverse panel of our talented and accomplished alumni will provide current students with an overview of their careers in medicine, education, law, entrepreneurship and the arts.  See listing of panelists below.

Student Career Workshop– All alumni are invited to participate in this collective event that will consist of alumni meeting with students, reviewing their resumes, offering advice on their careers, and creating a much-needed post-graduation network for the students.

La Vanguardia Reunion Dinner– This dinner will celebrate the 20th year anniversary of La Vanguardia's initiation.   Current students will be putting together an oral history of the organization by interviewing alumni over the weekend.

¡Carnival!  - Music, food and celebration are always key elements of the Latino culture and this event will be the perfect way to end a weekend of activities.  Featuring Jimmy Santiago & the Latin Affair whose mission is to "preserve and pass down our heritage" through Caribbeansounds of Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and much, much more!

This event is the first Latino event to be substantially funded by the President's Office, and we view this as a great opportunity to showcase our alumni's significant contributions in their industries/professions and communities.

If you are unable to attend and would like to contribute towards the success of this and future exciting events, we would be grateful for any support, financial or otherwise, that you may make.  For example, you may make a special donation for future events by specifying that your donation to the College go towards future Latino Renaissance events.  Alternatively, we would really appreciate your sharing this information and extend an invitation to this event to any other Latino Alumni!  Donations can be made on line via the Hamilton On Line Alumni Community (HOLAC) site www.hamilton.edu/alumni.

Alumni Career Panelists
·         Mr. Daniel Custódio('00) MBA Candidate/Artist/Publisher – Mr. Custódio graduated from Hamiltonwith a concentration in mathematics and a minor in computer science.  Daniel served as president of La Vanguardia for two terms, and led many events including a food drive for hurricane victims in Honduras.  He is a 2005 candidate for an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at NorthwesternUniversity, and recently published his first book of poetry, Rising to the Surface., He also started Traveling Poet, a publishing company that publishes the works of inner-city Latinos in Chicagoin hopes they find strength through poetry. 
·         Dr. Elsa Escalera('85)Physician/Director/Professor - Dr. Escalera graduated from Hamiltonwith a concentration in Spanish and received her MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  She completed her internship and residency at NorthwesternUniversityElsa is the first Latinafrom HamiltonCollegeto become a physician. She is Associate Medical Director for HIV services at Community Healthcare Network which consist of 8 separate community clinics in 4 N.Y.C. boros, and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
·         Mr. Daniel García('84) – President and CEO, Salsa Caterers & Special Events.  Mr. García graduated from Hamiltonwith a concentration Philosophy and is one of the founders of La Vanguardia.  Today, Daniel is the President and CEO of Salsa Caterers and Special Events, Inc. In an HBO Special, Salsa Caterers was praised by the Small Business Administration as a model company.
·         Professor Luis Murillo('82)Professor/Community Service - Professor Murillo  graduated from Hamiltonwith a concentration in History and a minor in East Asian studies.  Luis earned an M.A. in International Affairs from the GeorgeWashingtonUniversityand an M.A. and PhD in History from the Universityof California.  He is an assistant professor in the Department of Religion at TrinityUniversityin San Antonio, Texas.  He participates in various community service committees and has won numerous community service awards.
·         Dr. Jaqueline Salcedo ('87) – Physician/Private Practice/Partner – Dr. Salcedo graduated from Hamiltonwith a concentration in Biology and received her MD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.  Jackie specializes in Gastroenterology.  She is in private practice with a medical group, Gastroenterology Consultants, LTD, in Virginia Beach, VA.Not confirmed.
·         Vidal Torres, Esq.  ('00) – Corporate Attorney/MBA– Mr. Torres graduated from Hamiltonwith a double concentration in computer science and government.  Vidal was an active member of the radio and television stations, the Spectator, and served as Vice President of La Vanguardia.  He earned his JD/MBA from the Universityof Richmond.  He is a corporate attorney for Genworth Financial specializing in Corporate Governance, Mergers and Acquisitions and Transactional matters.
