Professor of Theatre Craig Latrell presented a paper on Aug. 13 at the eighth conference of the European Association for Southeast Asian Studies (EuroSEAS), held at the University of Vienna, Austria. The paper, “Weddings, Yoga, Hookups: Performed Identities and Technology in Bali,” was part of the panel on “Performative Publics and Global Modernities in Southeast Asia.”
Latrell described three different contemporary phenomena in Bali – destination weddings, yoga retreats and villas, and gay hookups between Balinese and tourists – and the ways in which they have re-imagined and shaped aspects of local culture by renegotiating connections between local and global.
