Both Mt. Holyoke and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs hosted presentations by Cheng Li, William R. Kenan Professor of Government and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, during the week of March 3. "The Emerging Leadership in China: Policy Priorities" was Li's topic at the March 6 presentation in Chicago at which he discussed the 11th National People's Congress and subsequent senior leadership changes. Li shared his thoughts on the policy priorities of the China's new leadership and how the country's economic policy might unfold as well as possible eventual successors of President Hu Jintao.

At Mt. Holyoke's McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives, Li presented "China's Future: A Paradox of Hope and Fear," on March 8 at a conference titled "Rise of China." The conference brought together scholars and practitioners from different fields and countries to examine the critical challenges and opportunities posed by China's rise as a global superpower.

On March 12, Li again discussed the changes effected during the 11th National People's Congress in the South China Morning Post in an article titled "Revamp puts new paint on old face." Questioned about a senior government leader, Li Keqiang, and his engagement in the cabinet restructuring, Cheng Li said, "He has very strong political ambitions. He would like to oversee the country's economic blueprint in the future."
