A children’s literary prize named for Jean D’Costa, the Leavenworth Professor of English emerita, was recently presented during the inaugural Lignum Vitae Writing Awards at the National Gallery of Jamaica. D’Costa taught at Hamilton from 1980 to 1998.

The Jean D’Costa Award for Children’s Literature features a prize of $2100 (U.S.). Competition for the award is open to Jamaican nationals and permanent residents of Jamaica. D’Costa, herself a Jamaican children’s author, was the main speaker at the Nov. 6 awards presentation. She called the awards a motivation for new and established writers to continue to strive for excellence and authenticity in telling their stories.

The Lignum Vitae Writing Awards will be presented biennially by the Jamaican Writers Society in partnership with the Jamaican Copyright and Licensing Agency.
