MacDonald Publishes Conversations with Filmmakers
Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald recently published a book titled Avant-Doc: Intersections of Documentary and Avant-Garde Cinema.
Published by Oxford University Press, MacDonald said Avant-Doc is a meta-conversation between him and a wide range of independent filmmakers who explore the cinematic territory between “documentary” and “avant-garde” film. The 20-plus interviews in the volume create a virtual community of filmmakers from across the United States as well as from Portugal, Indonesia and Austria.
Many of the filmmakers who collaborated on Avant-Doc have visited Hamilton in recent years. They include the late Ed Pincus, Leonard Retel Helmrich, Jonathan Caouette, Pawel Wojtasik, Alexander Olch, Arthur and Jennifer Smith, Jane Gillooly, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Pacho Velez. Visits by others are planned.
