Scott MacDonald's interview with Austrian filmmaker, installation artist and architect Gustav Deutsch has just been published in a book titled Gustav Deutsch and edited by Wilbirg Brainin-Donnenberg and Michael Loebenstein. Deutsch has added new dimensions to what is called "recycled cinema" or "found-footage film," that is, films made from other films.
Deutsch explores film archives for images that strike him as revelatory in ways that often go beyond their original implications. The resulting films are sometimes beautiful, sometimes amusing, sometimes erotic, sometimes harrowing--but always fascinating: indeed, Deutsch says his favorite nation is "fascination."
MacDonald hopes to present Deutsch's work this coming fall as part of F.I.L.M. He is currently on leave teaching with the Visual and Environmental Studies Department at Harvard,
