A co-written essay by Russell Marcus, the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of Philosophy, and Ashley Scheichet ’25, was recently published in Teaching Philosophy, the premiere journal for the scholarship of teaching and learning in philosophy. The essay is titled “A Contemporary Connections Option for Early Modern Syllabus Diversification.”
In the essay, the authors contrast typical reclamation strategies for improving representation in early modern philosophy courses, which involve adding material from neglected members of identity groups underrepresented in the profession, with a new contemporary connections alternative. On the contemporary connections approach, instructors put the dominant voices of the early modern era into conversation with diverse philosophers continuing to build on earlier themes.
