Mary Beth Day '07 was recognized by the New York State Legislature for recently being named to the USA Today All-USA College Academic First Team. Each February, USA Today honors 20 undergraduate academic all-stars as its All-USA College Academic Team. Day is the first Hamilton student to earn the honor. Assemblyman Dave Townsend, 115th District, and Senator Michael Nozzolio, 54th Senate District, co-sponsored the resolution. Day is a resident of Seneca Falls, N.Y., which is in Nozzolio's district, and Townsend's district includes Hamilton College. Townsend presented Day with a framed copy of the resolution at his Westmoreland office on May 18.

The resolution read, "HONORING Mary Beth Day, a senior at Hamilton College, for being named to the USA Today's Academic First Team

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Assembled Body to recognize and pay tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role models for their peers; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Assembled Body is justly proud to honor Mary Beth Day, a senior at Hamilton College, for being named to the USA Today's Academic First Team; and

WHEREAS, A Geo-Archeology major, Mary Beth Day is also a flutist and hobby baker; she has traveled to Iceland, Namibia, and has helped professors carry out high-level research projects and has also won many awards throughout her college career; and

WHEREAS, Mary Beth Day has been named to the USA Today's Academic First Team because of her success in college; she shared the honor with 19 other undergraduate students across the country; and

WHEREAS, Mary Beth Day's childhood inspiration was to become a paleontologist; over the years it waned, but only to resurface in her teens with an interest in archeological applications of geology, including learning about past land forms through studying sediments; and

WHEREAS, Growing up in Seneca Falls, Mary Beth Day was ready to leave Upstate New York after high school in favor of exploring another part of the country, but Hamilton College's strong Geo-Archeology program drew her to Clinton; and

WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and a determined purpose, this scholar stands honorably, with just pride in her accomplishments and in eager anticipation of future challenges, understanding and appreciating the caring counsel and support provided by her teachers and parents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Mary Beth Day, a senior at Hamilton College, for being named to the USA Today's Academic First Team; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably embossed, be transmitted to Mary Beth Day."
