The Hamilton College (12-5, 4-3) men's basketball team was defeated by St. Lawrence University (10-8, 3-4), 90-86 on Saturday at Scott Field House. St. Lawrence had four players score in double figures.
The game was tight throughout. Each team's lead was never more than six points throughout the game. St. Lawrence came out right away in the first half and took a 6-0 lead, as they would go on to lead by a narrow margin for much of the half. However, Hamilton kept chipping away at the Saints' lead and tied the score at 30-30 with six and-a-half minutes remaining until halftime. The Continentals took their first lead of the game with 3:34 remaining in the half when Joe Finley (Brooklyn, NY) scored from down low, giving Hamilton a 38-37 lead. After St. Lawrence came back and took the lead Greg Leone (Syracuse, NY) hit a three-pointer with 1:25 remaining in the half, tying the score at 43-43. Toby Bjorkman's (Duluth, MN) jumper with 18 seconds remaining gave Hamilton a 45-43 lead going into the half. Finley led Hamilton with 14 points, while Leone added 10. For St. Lawrence, Ahmad Toussaint (Teaneck, NJ) scored 11 points in the first half, while Dave Hannah (Randolph, VT) and Greg Sutton (Bethel, CT) each tallied 10 points for the Saints.
The second half was just as exciting as each team would get a small lead and then give it up. With 57 seconds remaining in regulation St. Lawrence held an 83-77 lead. Greg Leone made a three-pointer, cutting the Saints lead in half. Nick Burkhard (Beaver Falls, NY) was fouled and made both ends of a one-and-one, making it 85-80 St. Lawrence. Greg Leone took the in bounds pass and went coast-to-coast making the lay-up, making it 85-82 St. Lawrence. After two more Burkhard free throws Toby Bjorkman made a three-pointer, making it 85-87. Leone then stole the inbounds pass from Toussaint and was fouled with 18 seconds remaining. He missed the first and made the second. Hamilton fouled Dave Hannah with 16 seconds remaining. He made the first, giving St. Lawrence an 86-88 lead. He missed the second but the ball went off Joe Smith's hands out of bounds. Greg Leone looked to have been fouled on the inbounds pass. However, no foul was called and St. Lawrence came up with the ball. Greg Sutton was fouled with 10 seconds remaining. He made both to seal the victory for St. Lawrence.
