The men's lacrosse team defeated Alfred University 14-11 this afternoon in Clinton, New York. Senior Matt Silverio tied his career high for goals in a game with eight goals versus the Saxons.
Hamilton spotted Alfred a 2-0 lead in the first quarter before Silverio tallied his first goal of the game. After another Alfred goal Silverio struck again at the 8:36 mark of the first quarter. After another Alfred goal made it 4-2 the Continentals rattled off two straight goals from Dan Geiger and Silverio, tying the score at 4-4. The Saxons tallied the final goal of the quarter giving them a 5-4 lead after one.
Again the Saxons started a quarter off hot, scoring the first two goals of the second quarter extending their lead to 8-4. That's when Hamilton's offense woke up. The Continentals scored five times in the second quarter, taking a 9-4 lead. Geiger, Silverio and Jim Henry all scored goals in that run to pace the Continentals.
Alfred opened the third quarter with a goal, tying the score at 9-9. Geiger and Silverio each tallied a goal, giving Hamilton the 11-9 lead. However, Alfred would battle back and score the final two goals of the third quarter, cutting Hamilton's lead to 11-10.
Hamilton scored three times in the fourth quarter to sew up the game, including a man-down goal by Jim Henry which proved to be the game-winner.
Silverio had nine points on the day on eight goals and one assist. Jim Henry had seven points on two goals and five assists, while Geiger tallied five points on four goals and an assist. Jason Mleczko made seven saves in net for Hamilton, earning the win.
Hamilton is now 12-2 on the season and will host St. Lawrence University in the first round of the UCAA Tournament on Friday, May 2 at 5 pm in Clinton, New York.
