Miguel “Mickey” Melendez, an advocate for Latino and Puerto Rican rights, will present a lecture titled “The Puerto Rican Experience and the Young Lords” on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 4:15 p.m., in the Red Pit, KJ. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Melendez is the author of We Took to the Streets: Fighting for Latino Rights with the Young Lords, published in 2003 by Rutgers University Press. The memoir details the 1969 formation of the New York branch of the Young Lords by Melendez and some of his like-minded college friends as they fought against the social inequality of Latino Americans.

Melendez has held senior positions in New York City government and has taught at Baruch College. He received the Columbia University’s 2004-05 Charles H. Revson Fellowship, awarded to urban leaders who have made significant contributions to New York City.
