Professor of Biology Sue Ann Miller served on the Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) Committee of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society April 4-6 at the society’s headquarters in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
Twice each year, a group of scientists who are members of Sigma Xi, gather to evaluate more than 1,000 grant proposals submitted by an international pool of applicants. Miller has served as an evaluator since 2000. She chaired the committee from 2001 to 2007.
The Sigma Xi GIAR program has provided undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences for more than 90 years. The program has supported more than 40,000 students at a crucial time in their careers, with awards of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of $2,500 for vision related research and up to $5,000 for astronomy research.
Frank Price ’68 was also a member of the committee.
