Abandoned Factory in Utica by Bruce Muirhead
Abandoned Factory in Utica by Bruce Muirhead

Two paintings by William R. Kenan Professor of Art Bruce Muirhead are on display in the 27th International Exhibition at the Meadows Gallery at the University of Texas at Tyler. The juried exhibition of works by contemporary artists runs through March 9.

The paintings, “Abandoned Factory in Utica” and “Power Station in Verona,” are part of Muirhead’s ongoing series on Upstate and Central New York’s industrial past. Describing the series, Muirhead said, “These paintings speak to the end of that era and the decline of industrialization in the northeast. The images are the architectural remnants of that past. They are ghosts. Many of the buildings have been torn down and only exist in my memories or as scars on the landscape. I think they are somewhat like the images in a fossil imprinted on my mind.”
