Monday August 4  
Travel on your own to Rockland, Maine. Portland is the nearest major airport and is two hours from Rockland, the point of departure for Monhegan Island. Rental cars are available at the airport and will be needed for traveling to and from town and the ferry.   

3 - 6:30 p.m .

Check in - to the Eastwind Inn in Tenants Harbor, 15 minutes
south of Rockland
7 - 8:30 p.m. Dinner - at the Eastwind Inn
8:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Lecture by Chris Crossman - Chris, director of the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland will provide an orientation to the museum and lead a discussion of the Maine's role in the history of American art. Dessert and coffee will be served in Meeting House Commons Room.

 

Tuesday August 5
7 - 8:30 a.m. Breakfast- at the Eastwind Inn
8:30 - 9:00 a.m. Travel - to the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland
9:00 - 11:30 a.m. Farnsworth Museum Tour - in addition to the permanent collection "Maine in America," the museum shows include Andrew Wyeth's "Paintings of Siri Erickson" and "Pirates," a theme exhibition of Pyle, Schoonover, N.C. Wyeth and the Golden Age of Illustration.
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Free time in Rockland - commercial gallery visits and lunch on your own
1:30 - 2 p.m. Travel to ferry to Monhegan - return to the Eastwind to collect belongings and go on the 3 p.m. ferry for a 60 minute trip to the island
4 p.m. Check in - to Island Inn and Monhegan House, both short walks from the ferry. Monhegan Island is rocky and hilly. It is essential to bring comfortable walking shoes. 
5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Reception and viewing at the Lupine Gallery - the only commercial gallery on the island.
7 - 8:15 p.m. Dinner - at the Island Inn.
8:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Orientation lecture on the Monhegan artists' tradition by Ed Deci - at a nearby venue.

 

Wednesday August 6:   MONHEGAN ISLAND  
7- 8:30 a.m. Breakfast – at your inn
8:30 a.m. -noon Visit to Monhegan Museum and take a walking tour to the headlands.
noon – 2:30 p.m. Box lunch - at the headlands and walk back to the inns
2 – 5 p.m.

Seminar options:
1) Take a watercolor class - with local artist Joanne Scott, who will give a watercolor class followed by a visit to her studio or …
2) Tour 3 artists' studios - another fine walk takes you to the three  studios of Larry Goldsmith, Frances Kornbluth and Elena Jahan. All work in the abstract tradition. All will speak to the seminar group about their work and displays.

Thursday August 7:  MONHEGAN ISLAND   
7 -9 a.m. Breakfast – at your inn
9 a.m. Visits to artist studios - Arrangements are made to visit island studios of artists such as National Academician Don Stone whose impressionist oils are highly acclaimed; Sylvia Alberts, a New York artist who has been summering on the island for 35 years; and Sylvia Murdoch. In addition, there are 15 or so artists who have open studios, and paint with a wide range of styles and mediums. Many paint landscapes and seascapes in the realist tradition, but there are abstract painters, impressionists, and expressionists. The decision about which studios to visit will depend on how much walking individuals want to do.
noon: Lunch followed by Deci leading a panel discussion with a group of artists
2 p.m. Afternoon free for walks, relaxing and shopping - Maps of hiking trails will be available. Or, if you prefer you can sit on the porch in a rocking chair overlooking the active harbor.
4:30 p.m. Return Ferry - to Port Clyde
6 p.m. Check in - to Eastwind Inn
7 p.m.

Dinner - on your own in the Rockland area

Monhegan Alumni College –August 4-7, 2003


The cost for the Monhegan Alumni College is noted below and includes 4 nights lodging, meals noted on the schedule, ferry tickets, the museum tours and all the educational elements.

*  $1195 per person (single occupancy)


*  $1690 for double occupancy


*  A deposit of $250 per person is required no later than May 15, 2003


*  Please make checks payable to The Trustees of Hamilton College


*  The total amount for the Alumni College is due no later than June 4, 2003


The Monhegan Alumni College will be limited in size to 20 alumni/ae and friends plus the hosts. The small size and the need to secure lodging in the short, peak Maine summer season requires a deposit and limits the ability of the College to provide refunds.


*  Cancellations up to June 30 will receive a full refund, less $100 to cover administrative costs and cancellation charges at the inns


*  Sorry, but there can be no allowances for refunds after June 30, 2003


Public transportation is not readily available in the area. It will be necessary to rent a car at the Portland Airport if you do not drive to Rockland.
