When Bobby Fong settles into his post at Butler University in June, he will reach a level very few Asian-Americans have yet to attain: a college presidency. After a nationwide search, Butler's board of trustees named the 50-year-old English literature professor and administrator as its 20th leader. He's joined by only 20 Asian-Americans--representing just 0.9 percent--of college presidents throughout the country, according to the latest data...
"Sometimes it's uncomfortable feeling like you're a tribute to your race," said Fong from his office at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., where he served as dean of faculties, the second highest post. But he recognizes the link is unavoidable and feels his background has made him sensitive to the issues of civil rights for people of color.
