Associate Professor of Religious Studies Quincy Newell presented the 21st annual Leonard J. Arrington Mormon History Lecture on Sept. 24 at Utah State University. In her talk, “Narrating Jane: Telling the Story of an Early African American Mormon Woman,” Newell discussed lesser known aspects of Mormonism and minorities in the 19th century.
The lecture focused on Jane Elizabeth Manning James, one of the early African American converts to Mormonism and the subject of a biography Newell is currently writing.
