Tracy Adler, director of the Wellin Museum of Art, was recently invited to lead a conversation with former Wellin exhibiting artist Alyson Shotz during a recent ArtTable exhibition walkthrough in New York City.
ArtTable, a national organization of women in the arts, is described on its website as a “professional organization dedicated to advancing the leadership of women and nonbinary professionals in the visual arts.”
In 2014, Shotz’s work was featured at Hamilton’s Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art in the solo exhibition, Alyson Shotz: Force of Nature. An online exhibition announcement described the sculptor’s work as an examination of “the properties and interactions of light, gravity, mass, and space.”
The overview went on to say that “Shotz bridges disciplines in her work, drawing on scientific methods, mathematical principles, and literature, among other diverse fields,” and often uses “nontraditional materials such as glass beads, linen thread, stainless-steel filaments, and welded aluminum to create large-scale abstract sculptures,” expanding upon “conventional notions of sculptural space and form.”
