Omid Safi – a leading Muslim public intellectual, Duke University professor, author, and a frequently sought-after speaker on Islam in the media – will speak on "Progressive Islam, Radical Love: Rumi as an Islamic Voice of Divine Love" on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m., in the Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
Safi was born in the United States and is of Iranian descent. He was raised in Iran and fled Tehran to the United States with his family in 1985. He is the director of the Duke University Islamic Studies Center and professor of Islamic studies. His reflections appear frequently in The New York Times and The Washington Post and on PBS, CNN, NBC, NPR, and the BBC, among others.
He is the author of Memories of Muhammad: Why the Prophet Matters, which "attempts to discover the true Muhammad obscured by both hagiography and militant extremism," according to Religion News Service. He is also the author of Progressive Muslims, and Voices of Islam: Voices of Change and co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to American Islam.
