Professor of Government Stephen Orvis gave a lecture at the "Policy Lunch Series" at the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the University at Albany on Feb. 26. His presentation, "What Went Wrong in Kenya?," addressed the set of
developments - social, political, economic, domestic, international - that led to the violence in Kenya following elections; the prospects for the future; and possible solutions to enhance the development of a more stable democracy.

The series, hosted by the dean of the Rockefeller College, presents prominent scholars, advisors, journalists and public servants who speak on a broad range of policy issues facing local, state, federal and international governments. The theme for the series in 2008 is focused on an examination of why efforts to assist developing countries in overcoming multiple obstacles to development seem to have little appreciable effect on the mitigation of violent conflict, increasing economic growth, expansion of democracy or greater social equality. The series explores the set of obstacles to development in an effort to formulate an approach to how academic research might shed light on some of the deeper dilemmas to developing constructive approaches to policy and operations.
