Stefanie Russell '12, a Bonner Leader and Bonner Congress Representative, and Jordan Fischetti '08 and Stephanie Wolter '07, AmeriCorps VISTA Service-Learning Coordinators at Hamilton, attended the Bonner Summer Leadership Institute with Levitt Center Associate Director for Community Research Judith Owens-Manley in Deland, Fla., in June. Fischetti coordinated the Bonner Leader Program and the Youth Development Service-Learning Project in the Levitt Center during the 2008-09 academic year, and Wolter has been the coordinator for Project SHINE (Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders) for the past two years.

The group presented two workshops at the conference: “Refugee & Immigrant Issues: Deepening Levels of Engagement” and “The Beginnings of a Youth Development Project: Challenges & Rewards.” The Summer Leadership Institute brings together students, faculty and administrators from 80 colleges and universities with Bonner programs for four days of workshops and planning. The conference is focused on strengthening local communities and building a broader campus culture and infrastructure for civic engagement.
