Two groups of highly selective, small liberal arts colleges and universities have developed a series of measurements to gauge the effectiveness of their alumni relations efforts. The metrics examined a wide range of alumni engagement activities and include alumni council representation. Of the twenty-five schools who responded to the survey, Hamilton's 246- member Alumni Council is, by a wide margin, the most inclusive. Colby College was second with 99 representatives. The average size of alumni governance bodies for all the respondents is 46 members.

The breadth of alumni representation on the Hamilton Alumni Council, and the many activities of its committees and participants, provides all alumni with numerous opportunities to hear and be heard on a wide variety of matters related to the College and Alumni Association issues and governance. The Council is made up of the Executive Committee, Class Presidents, Class Agents, Regional Alumni Association Presidents, GOLD Chairs, Nominations Committee and the Multicultural Alumni Relations Committee.

The mission of the Council is to support the key needs of the College and its alumni by mobilizing the talent, expertise, time and financial resources of all alumni. To do this, the Council is charged with leading all alumni volunteer groups in meeting the needs of the College and its alumni; providing an effective communications link between all alumni and all constituencies of the College; identifying, recruiting, and inspiring alumni and prospective alumni to work in support of the College and each other, and providing recognition for those who do; and fostering a spirit of loyalty and fellowship among alumni.

The Alumni Association Web site provides a wealth of additional information on all Council activity.
