Professor of Communication Catherine W. Phelan presented a paper last month at the 16th Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association (MEA) in Denver, Colo. Her work explored the varied ways in which our experiences of community are redefined by the digital communication revolution.
In “Listening to the Twenty-First Century Kaleidoscope: Community Redefined,” Phelan juxtaposed select images from G. Reggio’s film Koyaanisqutsi (1984) with the ideas of Teihlehard de Chardin (1955/56) to illustrate how collectively we are becoming conscious of social patterns that were, in an earlier era, below the threshold of awareness.
