Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Rodriguez-Plate participated in the American Academy of Religion (AAR) annual meeting in Montreal, Nov. 7-10. The AAR is the largest gathering of religious studies students and scholars around the world with approximately 5,000 persons in attendance. During this year's meeting, Plate was awarded an individual research grant that will enable him to travel to Kyoto, Japan, to study Zen gardens next year.

During the meeting, Plate also delivered a paper on Bill Maher's documentary Religulous and presided over a session discussing Denys Arcand's film Jesus of Montreal. As chair of the jury for the award in "Religion and the Arts," Plate presented this year's award to Canadian filmmaker Zarqa Nawaz, creator of the hit Canadian sitcom Little Mosque on the Prairie.
