Playwright John O'Keefe returns to Hamilton College with a new evening of work on Saturday Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn. The performance, "Two Songs," features O'Keefe's "Sunshine's a Glorious Bird" and the world premiere of his adaptation of Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself." The play is free and open to the public.
The "Sunshine's a Glorious Bird" was written for the Blake Street Hawkeyes as a quartet in 1978. It was later adapted by O'Keefe into a solo performance and now into its current form as a duet with metronome. O'Keefe's performance of "Two Songs" premiered in New York City this month at The Public Theatre's Under The Radar Festival.
John O'Keefe is an internationally acclaimed playwright, director and solo performer. His play "All Night Long" was produced at Hamilton in 2002, and in 2005 he served as Dan Dietrich Playwright in Residence for the production of his play "Reapers," directed by Carole Bellini-Sharp, professor of theatre.
His solo piece "Shimmer," produced around the country and in Europe, won the Bessie Award and was made into a motion picture by American Playhouse. His most recent work includes his "Occupation Trilogy: Glamour" (winner of a National Critic's Citation), "Spook," and "Times Like These" (winner of the LA Drama Critics Circle and LA Weekly Awards for Best Play); "Reapers," produced at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles through an NEA/TCG Residency Grant; and the libretto for "Chrysalis," a new opera written with Clark Supranowitz for the Berkeley Opera.
