President Joan Hinde Stewart has begun a semester-long sabbatical to pursue scholarly work. Dean of Faculty Joe Urgo is serving as acting president until President Stewart resumes her duties this summer.

Stewart is one of the most distinguished international scholars of French literature and culture, and there is interest in the scholarly community in the research project she initiated prior to being named Hamilton's 19th president.

Many college presidents, especially those who are active scholars, are granted sabbaticals. Stewart's leave follows the successful conclusion of the Excelsior Campaign and just as the final draft of the College's next strategic plan is nearing completion. "This is an opportune time for President Stewart to re-engage more fully with her scholarship," Urgo said. "It's also important practically and symbolically that the president of an academic institution such as Hamilton remain an active scholar and teacher."

Although her focus for the next six months will be on her scholarship, Stewart will remain involved in College operations and plans to preside at Commencement. "President Stewart and I remain in regular contact and she will be involved in any major policy decisions throughout the semester," said Urgo. "We anticipate no disruption to the daily life of the College."
