Clinton, NY -- Dec. 16, 2002 -- The search committee charged with recommending a new president to the Hamilton College Board of Trustees has issued a "Challenge Statement" for prospective candidates.

The 14-page document contains an overview of the college, identifies the challenges facing the college's next chief executive, and summarizes the qualities the committee is seeking from the person who will become Hamilton's 19th president. According to the statement, the ideal candidate will be:
  • A visionary and strategic thinker
  • An experienced leader
  • A visible and passionate spokesperson for the college
  • A person with a deep-seated and proven commitment to diversity
  • An advocate for the faculty
  • An academic leader
  • An accessible and approachable person
  • A decisive leader/manager
  • An administrator who understands technology
  • A person who can nurture and enhance Hamilton's already effective alumni relations organization

The Challenge Statement is available online.

The Challenge Statement was developed after the search committee and its consultants held more than 30 informational meetings with students, faculty, staff and local community leaders on campus during the week preceding Thanksgiving. The document will be the college's initial response to prospective candidates.
