Barbara Gold

Barbara Gold, the Edward North Professor of Classics and Greek Literature Emerita, presented a lecture titled “Perpetua: Athlete of God” at Skidmore College on Nov. 15. Gold’s book by the same name was published by Oxford University Press in October.

In her lecture, Gold discussed aspects of the life of Perpetua, an early Christian martyr who died in Roman Carthage in 203 CE. She covered topics including Perpetua’s family and life in Carthage, as well as Christians and Romans in North Africa and in the Roman empire at that time, the comparisons of martyrs to athletes, and the influence of these martyr tales upon the Acts of the Apostles and the Greek novel.
