Burgess Professor of French Roberta (Bonnie) Krueger contributed a chapter to Approaches to Teaching the Works of Christine de Pizan, edited by Andrea Tarnowski, and published by the Modern Language Association.
In “Christine de Pizan and the Moral Education of Women: Teaching Le Livre des trois vertus,” Krueger focuses on how 21st century students might approach a conduct book written for all classes of women in the early 15th century.
Kruger says that although Christine appears to endorse traditional gender roles and support medieval social hierarchy, her book offers numerous examples of female agency in the household and at court.
