Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz, Margaret Bundy Scott Professor of Comparative Literature, gave a paper titled, “Marriage or Rape? Aeschylus’ Suppliants and Charles Mee’s Big Love” at the British Classical Association meetings in Exeter, U.K.
The paper continues her earlier work on rape in Greek tragedy and contrasts the ancient and modern versions of the story of the 50 daughters of Danaus who resist marriage to their 50 cousins, ultimately killing them. One daughter, however, does not follow through. Big Love was staged at Hamilton College under the direction of Craig Latrell.
