Consuming Catastrophe: Mass Culture in America’s Decade of Disaster

Visiting Assistant Professor of Communication Timothy Recuber recently received the 2018 Recent Contribution award from the Sociology of Emotions section of the American Sociological Association (ASA) for his book Consuming Catastrophe: Mass Culture in America’s Decade of Disaster.

Published in 2016 by Temple University Press, the book focuses on the media’s coverage of four disasters—the 9/11 attacks, Hurricane Katrina, the Virginia Tech shootings, and the 2008 financial crisis—and how emotions may influence and be influenced by that coverage.

According to Recuber’s award notification, the Recent Contribution Committee found the book to be “engaging, well written, and an important contribution to the field of emotions.”
