The fall semester at Hamilton is just beginning but you might want to mark your calendars for the following upcoming events. A number of world-renowned authors, policymakers and activists will be lecturing on the Hill.

Jonathan Kozol, a distinguished educator, scholar and activist, will speak on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the college Chapel. Kozol will present a lecture titled "Savage Inequalities:  Class, Race, and Social Justice in U.S. Public Schools . His 1967 book, Death at an Early Age, describes that first year as a teacher.  It received the 1968 National Book Award in Science, Philosophy, and Religion and has sold more than two million copies in the United States and Europe.  Kozol is the author of nine more books, including Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools.


Ron Chernow, award-winning biographer, will give the Victor Johnson Lecture at Hamilton on Thursday, Sept. 30. Chernow will present his lecture, "Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Imagined America," in the Hamilton College Chapel at 4:15 p.m.  Chernow's most recent release, Alexander Hamilton, (Penguin Press, 2004) is a comprehensive biography about the life of the first Secretary of the Treasury.

Author Dorothy Allison will give a lecture, "A Racecar Named Desire: The Intersection of Class, Sex and Gender in Contemporary American Culture," on Thursday, Oct. 7, at 4:10 p.m. in the Chapel. Allison is the award-winning author of Bastard Out of Carolina (Dutton Books, 1992), which was nominated for the National Book Award.  In another appearance at Hamilton, she will read from her upcoming novel, She Who, on Friday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel.

As part of Hamilton's Fallcoming celebration, commentator/author Frank Deford will give a lecture on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel, followed by a book signing and reception at 9 p.m. Among the most versatile of writers, Frank Deford's work has appeared in virtually every medium. In print, he has returned to Sports Illustrated, where his byline originally appeared from 1962-89. On radio, he may be heard as a commentator on NPR's Morning Edition. On television, he is a regular correspondent on the HBO show, RealSports with Bryant Gumbel. The author of 14 books, Deford has a wonderful sense of humor and will share his experience as an author, journalist and commentator.

Alice Rivlin, Brookings Institute's Senior Fellow and director of its Greater Washington Research Program in Economic Studies, will give a lecture on Monday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel.  She is also a visiting professor at Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute.  A former vice chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from 1996 to 1999 and director of the White House Office of Management and Budget from 1994 to 1996, Rivlin is the author of several books including Restoring Fiscal Sanity: How to Balance the Budget (co-editor with Isabel V. Sawhill - 2004); and Beyond the Dot.coms: The Economic Promise of the Internet (with Robert E. Litan – 2001).


Newsweek editor and author Christopher Dickey will give a lecture on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel.  Dickey is author of the new novel The Sleep (Simon & Schuster). He has served as Newsweek's Middle East regional editor since 1993 and as Paris bureau chief since 1995. He reports on European politics, economy, society and new technologies, as well as developing stories throughout North Africa, the Near East and the Persian Gulf. He plays a key role in Newsweek's coverage of the war on terror and writes the weekly "Shadowland" column for the magazine's Web site. In addition to his novels, his nonfiction books include Summer of Deliverance, Expats and With the Contras.

The Honorable William Jefferson Clinton, the 42nd president of the United States, will give a free public lecture at Hamilton on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m., a week after the 2004 presidential election, in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Clinton was elected president of the United States in 1992 and again in 1996 – the first Democratic president to be awarded a second term in six decades. Under his leadership, the U.S. enjoyed the strongest economy in a generation and the longest economic expansion in U.S. history.  President Clinton's newly released memoir, My Life (Knopf, June 2004), sold 1.5 million copies in its first month on sale.
