Some of the sites the state has identified as stops on the underground railroad do not have enough historical evidence to tie then to the safe house network for fugitive slaves, a researcher said.
At the same time, the state may miss other underground railroad stops unless serious research is done, said Peter Hinks, a history professor at Hamilton College in New York.
..."Research must continue and must not rely simply on asking municipal historians to submit documentation; often they are lacking this and are not now in some cases equipped to do necessary investigation," Hinks reported.
