Internships, whether paid or unpaid, are often the ideal option for Hamilton students seeking to gain experience in professional fields over the summer months. Hamilton’s Scott Regan ’11 was fortunate enough to find, through HamNet, a summer internship in a field that interests him. Regan will spend this summer as an intern in the offices of Merrimack Valley Legal Services, a law office based in Massachusetts.

Regan is one of 14 Hamilton students who will benefit from unpaid internship funding from the Joseph F. Anderson Fund. The Anderson Fund, which was established by several Hamilton alumni in appreciation of Mr. Anderson’s long-standing association with and commitment to Hamilton College, is one of several financial resources made available by the Career Center for Hamilton students who spend the summer as unpaid interns.

MVSL is a not-for-profit legal aid program in Lowell, Massachusetts, that provides free legal advice and representation in civil cases to low-income and elderly residents across the state. Because MVSL’s legal services are free, it receives funding from the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation and from foundation grants and charitable donations. Regan is spending this summer working in the field of foreclosure prevention and bankruptcy for low income homeowners. His day-to-day work consists of case support in the form of legal research and writing, client contact and other office support.

Regan, an economics major, sees this internship as a precursor to law school, which he plans on attending after he graduates next spring. He says that the experience he’s gaining at MVSL is invaluable and fits in nicely with his present career goals. “At the office I’m treated like a law student so I’m getting a pretty in-depth look at what will be expected of me in the near future and what law and working in a law office is really like,” Regan said. “At the very least this will help me decide if law really is the direction I want to go with a career and which kind of law specifically.
