Winslow Professor of Chemistry George Shields presented a seminar at the University of Minnesota's department of chemistry in December. His lecture, titled "Water Clusters in the Atmosphere: An Overview of Computational Chemistry Research at Hamilton College," was Webcast live to 35 institutions. His talk featured the atmospheric chemistry work of Emma Pokon '04, Meghan Dunn '06, and Mary Beth Day '07.
Shields briefly reviewed the biochemical research of Sarah Taylor '03, Damien Ellens '03, Lorena Hernandez '03, Abby Markeson '04, Heather Michael '07, and Sarah Felder '07. He also discussed the work of senior thesis students Tim Evans, Katrina Lexa, Scott Huntington, and Frank Pickard. Research progress in computational chemistry has been accelerated by the contributions of Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry Karl Kirschner, who joined the group this past June. The University of Minnesotais considered to have one of the best graduate programs in computational chemistry in the world.
