Jaime Lee Kucinskas.

Research by Associate Professor of Sociology Jaime Kucinskas was recently featured on the Moral Matters podcast, produced by the American Sociological Association’s Altruism, Morality and Social Solidarity Section. The research was conducted with Evan Stewart of UMass Boston.

In the episode titled “Does spirituality lead to political engagement?” the researchers shared findings from their recent article published in the American Sociological Review. The article explores how, contrary to popular opinion and some recent research, spiritual practitioners are just as likely to be politically engaged as religious practitioners are.

Rather than a shift from religion to “selfish spirituality,” Kucinskas and Stewart theorize that many Americans are undergoing a shift to spiritual practice that is likely marked by new forms of civic and political engagement.
