Doug McAdam

Doug McAdam, professor of sociology at Stanford University, will speak at Hamilton College on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn on Hamilton's campus. This event is part of the "Inequality and Equity" lecture series sponsored by the college's Arthur Levitt Center. McAdam's lecture is titled "The Civic Effects of Youth Service: The Surprising Case of Teach for America" and is based on his most recent writings on the subject. This event is free and open to the public.

McAdam is the author of several books and numerous articles, including the award-winning Freedom Summer (1988).  A renowned expert on social movements and contentious politics, McAdam's research includes a study of crime and social disorganization in Chicago and an examination of recent church burnings in the American South. Prior to teaching at Stanford, McAdam, a sociologist, had been on the faculties of University of Arizona and Stanford University, returning to Stanford in 2005. He was elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003.
