Debris in the desert.
Debris in the desert.
Eight Hamilton students traveled to the borderlands of Southern Arizona to participate in a service trip with No More Deaths during spring break in March. The participants included Wai Yee Poon, Melissa Balding, Devin Farkas, Sara Miller, Laura Radlinski, Caroline Pierce, Alex Benkhart and Corinne Bancroft. These students spent a week camping with No More Deaths and providing humanitarian aid to migrants crossing the desert. They experienced the extremities of the desert, surviving snow the first night and 80 degree heat in the following days. Students also bore witness to the challenges that face migrants forced to cross the desert by the things they left behind.

During the No More Deaths training students discussed the complexities of immigration issues, learned about civil initiative, and a brief history of the border region. Twenty-five Hamilton students have participated in the No More Deaths program this year (17 volunteered for two weeks during winter break). The camps will be open this summer and everyone is welcome to volunteer. For more information email cbancrof@hamilton.edu or action@nomoredeaths.com.
