Assistant Professor of Literature Pavitra Sundar was an invited presenter at an international conference on “Sound and South Asia” at the University of Michigan Oct. 7-8. She presented “Voice, Body and a Sexy ‘Didi’” in a session on “Listening to Images.”
The conference was organized to explore questions relating to sound studies and South Asian studies, with a specific focus on India. The goal was to bring the Indian subcontinent into the discussion of sound, an area that has generally focused on Europe and the United States.
Topics covered at the conference were centered on themes of instruments of sound, sound in performance, sonic commodities and the sound of images.
