A $370,000 gift from charter trustee David Solomon '84 and his wife Mary will enable Hamilton College to make its campus completely wireless by the time classes begin again this fall.

"This splendid gift will facilitate the sharing of information across our campus and will enhance the educational process," said Hamilton President Joan Hinde Stewart. "We are deeply grateful to David and Mary for their discernment and generosity."

Vice President for Information Technology David Smallen said the college has been introducing wireless connectivity to campus as buildings have been renovated during the past six years. "The major impact of this gift will be making wireless access available in all residence halls and in most outside areas of the campus," according to Smallen.

Full wireless connectivity will enhance academic resources on campus, he added. "A major part of the academic program involves collaboration among students and between students and faculty," Smallen said. "Completing the college's wireless project will enhance interactions because collaborative work can now take place from practically anywhere on campus." He noted that 97 percent of Hamilton students have computers and 92 percent of those are laptops, with both percentages increasing each year.

Smallen predicted that a variety of devices that are smaller than laptops, such as smart phones, will become more common on campus and will be capable of accessing information over the wireless network.

David Solomon, a charter trustee since 2005 and an alumni trustee from 1996-2002, is co-head of investment banking for the Goldman Sachs Group Inc. He serves the Hamilton board as a member of the admission, investment and student affairs committees.
