Nine Hamilton College students and five faculty members got an early start on the spring semester by returning to campus early and volunteering for Urban Service Experience (USE). The program – in its fourth year – seeks to create a positive impact on the Hamilton community by sending participants into the surrounding community to volunteer with local agencies, while experiencing the cultural life of Utica.
This year's USE group worked at the Compassion Coalition (food bank), tutored and toured the Refugee Center. Participants were also scheduled to meet with Utica Municipal Housing Authority Hope VI staff, set up a computer resource room at the Martin Luther King Jr. School, and work at the Thea Bowman Bridges After School Program.
The USE program is sponsored by the Kirkland Project, a collective of faculty members dedicated to gender equity, social justice, and issues of diversity.
