February's Arboretum Winter Series 2009 workshop was given by Vincent Simeone, an expert horticulturist who works for Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Long Island. He has been in horticulture for over 20 years; his past experience includes working with well-known Dr. Michael Dirr, teaching classes at the New York Botanical garden, giving garden lectures all over the world, and writing several books on landscaping and smart plant choices. We were pleased to bring such a renowned expert here to Hamilton.

Simeone highlighted various species and cultivars that have multiple season interest, including several plants that are especially interesting during the winter. He showed slides of foliage, bark, flowers, and growth habit of diverse shrubs and trees, including at least 5 rare maple varieties, hydrangeas that bloom all summer long, a blight resistant elm, a deer resistant cryptomeria, a crab apple variety with fruit lasting into February, and various plants that are hardy even in low zone 4. Each attendee was provided with a plant list that Simeone compiled; there are similar lists and other information about Simeone at www.vincentsimeone.com.
