Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Zhuoyi Wang recently completed a series of 10 invited public lectures on Chinese-language cinemas and Hollywood for Henan University in China. Due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, Wang presented all the lectures remotely through online conferencing.
Wang discussed the complex interactions and nuanced negotiations between Hollywood and diverse Chinese-language film cultures, providing in-depth analyses of such Chinese-language and Hollywood films as Mulan Joins the Army (1939), Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy (1970), Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), Mulan (1998), The Matrix (1999), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Tortilla Soup (2001), Hero (2002), Infernal Affairs (2002), Kill Bill vols. 1 & 2 (2003 and 2004), The Departed (2006), Taking of the Tiger Mountain (2014), and The Wandering Earth (2019).
