Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas, and Alissa Trotz from the University of Toronto, recently co-authored an article featured in the November 2023 issue of Small Axe: Caribbean Journal of Criticism.
The article, titled "Insurgent Knowledges: Reading How Europe Underdeveloped Africa alongside the Rupture in Guyana," offers a critical analysis of the complexities surrounding education, political leadership, and racial dynamics in both colonial and post-colonial Guyana. Their work draws upon the enduring relevance of Walter Rodney's seminal book, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa.
