Wellin Museum of Art Associate Director and Curator Susanna White presented on a panel about visible storage as classroom at the annual meeting of the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries in Seattle on May 17. Her paper, "A Museum Turned Inside Out: The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College," examined the pedagogical tradition and vision at Hamilton that inspired the design of the museum and its unparalleled commitment to visible storage.
White explained, "Public art museums have embraced visible storage for a number of years now but few academic museums have explored this teaching tool. This is changing, however, as our peers are working toward making their collections more accessible and seeking ways to engage faculty and students in all departments. The Wellin has quickly become a leader in this area and others are looking to our program as they plan new installations and facilities."
